10 Reasons Why your car won't start

We all experience that miserable day, when our car isn't in a good mood to start and many of us are late for work or an important event. As most of the people only know about driving the car, it becomes a huge hassle for them to identify the possible problems when their car doesn't start.

There are many reasons why your car won't start. Today in this blog, I am going to share some major problems that can be present in your car if your car won't start. I'll also write down the possible ways you can deal with this situation. So, Let's begin!

Following are the reasons why your car won't start:

1. You car has run out of Fuel:

This is the most common reason why your car won't start. If you turn on the start switch and the engine of your car cranks but is not starting, it's almost definite that your car has run out of fuel.
The easiest solution for this problem is to fill more fuel in your fuel tank and hopefully, you would never face any starting issues, if the car has no other mechanical problems.

2. Dead Battery:

This is also a very common problem why your car is not starting. If you experience that your car is cranking very slowly or not at all, then dead battery is  most probably the case.

But what causes dead battery? Well, there can be several reasons why your car battery is dead.

  • Alternator is what charges the battery when a car engine is on and supplies the electricity needed to operate the lights and radio. A bad alternator won't be able to charge the battery     efficiently, leading to sufficient charge in the battery. Eventually, the battery is dead. Changing or repairing the alternator is the most effective solution to dead battery.

  • Sometimes, people forget to turn off the headlights or dome light of their car, which eats all the charge in the battery and leaves the battery dead. So, never forget to turn off all the lights of your car when switching the engine off.

  • The lifespan of your battery has expired. Consider replacing the battery.

  • Loose battery wires can also make the battery dead.

To test whether your car battery is dead. Jump start the car and if it starts, Your car most likely has a dead battery problem.

Buy a battery charger, this device can be really useful if your car battery dies. You can easily charge your battery by yourself if you're at home or at any commercial spot.

3. Battery corrosion

The corrosion of battery terminals make it dirty therefore, the battery is unable to provide enough electric power to start the car. Clean your battery terminals well and then start the car.

If you don't know how to clean the battery terminals properly, then consider visiting your nearest battery or electrician shop.

4. Faulty fuel pump

A fuel pump in a car transfers the fuel from the fuel tank to the carburetor or fuel injector of the engine. With a bad fuel pump, the supply of fuel is cut off to the engine therefore, your car won't start. A bad fuel pump has several signs:

  • the car will jerk due to less amount of fuel pumping from the fuel pump to the engine.

  • low fuel pressure to car's engine.

  • overheating of engine.

If the car's engine is cranking properly but isn't starting, it's possible that the engine isn't getting enough amount of fuel to start. Consider changing your fuel pump and the problem would be solved.

5. Bad starter motor

A starter motor is what rotates the internal-combustion engine, so that the engine can run under its own power. You won't be able to start the car by the switch with a faulty starter motor. But, you can still start the car by "jump start". You'll need to repair or change the starter motor for smooth starting of engine by switch.

A bad starter motor has the following symptoms:

  • Clicking sound when you turn on the key or press the push start button.

  •  A buzzing sound when you turn on the key, most probably the engine won't crank because the electricity is being provided to the starter but the motor isn't running.

  • Slow cranking of the car engine.

If your car experience any of these symptoms, then there might be a problem with the starter motor.

6. Faulty or loose timing Belt

The timing belt of your car make sure the valves of the engine open and close at the right interval. It plays a significant role in controlling the pistons and valves of your car's engine. A bad timing belt can damage your engine     which then needs replacement.

A rattling noise coming from the engine can be one sign of bad timing belt. You can also experience exhaust issues in your car. An oil leak near your car engine can also indicate a bad timing belt problem. A loose timing belt can cause engine misfire which requires the replacement of timing belt immediately. With a faulty timing belt, you won't be able to start your car.

7. Clogged Fuel filter

A fuel filter cleans the fuel and prevents the engine from harmful waste that is present in the fuel. A clogged fuel filter means your car's fuel filter is blocked by different particles and sediments wearing out from fuel tank walls. This blockage can cause low fuel pressure to the engine. Therefore, your car won't start.

The blockage can also affect the fuel pump and engine performance badly. The car will not accelerate properly in case it starts. You may also smell strong odor of fuel due to the blockage. You must change the fuel filter for the smooth flow of fuel to the engine and prevent your car from further mechanical damage.

8. Bad Ignition coil

Ignition or spark coils are the electrical transformers which convert battery current (12 Volts in most cases) into a high voltage current that is required to ignite the fuel and start the car's engine. Each ignition coil is attached to a spark plug with a wire. A bad ignition coil can be one of many reasons why your car isn't starting. A weak ignition coil will cause poor fuel economy and engine misfire

A bad ignition coil can also affect the voltage of battery by lowering the voltage or making it abnormally high. Eventually, your car battery also suffers from damage or dies.

Backfire, engine jerking, rough idling, and poor power can be some signs of bad ignition coil. Replace the ignition coil immediately, if your car has these symptoms.

9. Broken distributor cap

A distributor cap is a cup-shaped plastic cover that fits at the end of a distributor in a car.The distributor cap protects distributor's internal parts and holds the contact between internal rotor and spark plugs. It's function is to transfer the voltage to cylinders from ignition coils. Then the ignition coil ignites the fuel and so the engine starts.

Distributor caps are often subjected to heat or vibration which results in a crack in the distributor cap. Moreover, carbon deposits can occur on the cap over time which can also cause the distributor cap not to function properly.

Especially in cold weather, it can be difficult to start the car because the moisture will get under the cap. You can also clean up the distributor cap by yourself, just open the screws and wipe it out with a dry cloth inside the distributor cap and clean it properly. Simply reinstall the distributor cap and then start the car. If you observe a crack in the distributor cap, then replace and install a new distributor cap.

Following are some major signs of bad distributor cap:

  • Car doesn't start.

  • Engine misfires.

  • Check engine light appears.

  • Unusual noises by engine.

If you aren't able to fix the distributor cap on your own. Then call or visit your nearest mechanic to solve this issue.

10. Bad or contaminated spark plugs

A spark plug is a device that is connected to the cylinder head of an internal-combustion engine. It transfers electric current from ignition chamber of a spark-ignition engine to ignite air/fuel mixture, producing an explosion which makes the engine produce power.

Bad or contaminated sparking plugs can be very troublesome. It can can various issues in your car.

  • Dirty or worn out spark plugs make it difficult to start the car.

  • It can cause poor fuel mileage in your car .

  • It can cause engine misfire, you may hear a sputtering sound or sudden loss of power in your car.

  • It can cause slow the acceleration in your car.

A fouled or bad spark plugs gets covered by a substance like oil, carbon and fuel. Therefore, the spark plugs aren't able to ignite the air/fuel mixture, making it difficult to start the car.

If the above symptoms appear in your vehicle, chances are that you're dealing with a bad sparking plug. In most cases the dirty spark plugs are cleaned by the mechanic and then reinstalled in the car's engine. But, if the plug is damaged, it needs to be replaced with a new one.
